Future proofing local farms

Access to water and energy costs are significant challenges facing Irrigators and Farmers all across the country.

But for farmers in Gympie, many are already making use of by installing new high-tech irrigation systems to try to control what could be the next historical drought season.

With soaring costs and unpredictable weather, these systems are becoming a growing trend in the industry.

The move to solar-powered irrigation is proving popular amongst Queensland farmers of which 4 systems currently operate within the Gympie region for larger scale projects, predominantly on properties raising pasture for cattle.

Due to dramatic improvements in technology, long-term energy cost savings and the ability to future proof businesses, local farmers have been making use of these benefits.

Peter Chadband from The Pump House, a pumps and irrigation specialist and Grundfos distributor, in Queensland, says demand for these irrigations systems has been increasing rapidly the last five years.

“We are seeing ‘drier dries and wetter wet’s’ as the climate changes, leaving more farmers increasingly having to future-proof their farms,” he said.

“This technology has been evolving for years, the last 8 years being spent on solar to enable us to create these systems.

“This it give give farmers an efficient way to use water, electricity and keep costs down.”

From inception in 1986, The Pump House has grown to include 4 store locations including Gympie as well as Nambour, Beerwah and Chinchilla) , a fabrication workshop, a fleet of over 30 fully equipped service vehicles, and a team of over 60 permanent staff.
