Nothing Boran about this breed

Peter and Lesley Jolly were overwhelmed by local interest in their African Boran Cattle which were on display at this year's Gympie Show recently.

Toogoolawah cattle breeders, Peter and Lesley Jolly said they were overwhelmed with interest in their Boran cattle, who were on display at the 2023 Gympie Show.

The couple were set up with their animals near the animal nursery and their display also featured a bamboo hut, zebra masks and replica African tribal elements, referencing the breed’s origin.

The bamboo hut was a hit with the smaller children, which allow cattle enthusiasts the opportunity to discuss the advantages presented by this relatively unknown breed with the Jollys without interruption.

Boran cattle, due to being an African breed, are able to thrive in dry, sub-tropical conditions and are relatively unbothered by the heat.

They are also tick resistant and have great hybrid vigour, even with Brahman varieties.

Despite being a medium frame, they are also quiet natured and have a high food conversion rate, even on low quality pastures, according to the couple.

“They had to be, to survive 1300 years of African desert living,” Peter said.

Lesley especially enjoys her cattle time with the breed on their stud at Toogoolawah, called Australian Boran Cattle.

“This breed is special,” she said.
