No to ‘dunno say no’

YES, I agree.

Thanks Captain Glover of the Salvation Army for your wonderful letter “Voice will make a difference” (Letters, Gympie Today September 15).

I share your bemusement that the Salvation Army be referred to as one of “the elites” supporting the YES vote for the Voice and I admire your carefully reasoned explanation for reaching that position.

Many Australians have been prepared to look into what’s proposed and have reached the same conclusion.

Unfortunately, others find it easier to just say “no”, for a bewilderingly wide range of reasons, many of which are based on misinformation.

I couldn’t agree more with your statement “we believe the best way…. is to actually listen to the people affected-to give them a voice.”

This isn’t a politician’s idea; it’s come from First Nations people, expressed in the Uluru Statement from the Heart, asking to be listened to.

They deserve more than just a shrug of the shoulders and a cursory “dunno, vote no” response.

Let’s hope wider Australia takes the time to inform themselves on what a Voice is and what it isn’t and reach the same enlightened position as that of the Salvation Army.
