Killy cattle kids impress at Wondai

The Kilkivan State School Cattle Team had a great time and made a great impression with the Wondai Show Society last weekend.

Last weekend the Kilkivan State School Cattle team travelled to Wondai Show for an overnight camp competing on both Friday and Saturday.

This was the last Show for the team for the year and it’s always a great way to end the Show season.

First up was the Young Paraders competition with 6 members getting up into finals.

Then was the Young Stud Judges competition were the students ran their eyes over 12 month old bulls, assessing them for structure, fertility and growth.

Five of the team were called to present their reasoning speech to the judge, with the of students then going on to receive place ribbons.

The Kilkivan team then went on to be announced the Wondai Show Champion School for 2023.

“We are always amazed and excited to see our small team achieve such high accolades,” said spokeswoman for the group Teresa Day.

“Our students continually represent themselves and our school with pride and we are extremely proud of their efforts. We’d like to thank Riverina Stockfeeds and Cleggs Masonry, Wondai for their generous prize donations.”

On Saturday the team’s steers were judged and the team stepped out in the 350-450kg Led Steer Category, taking out two places in a large class.

Henry, the Limo X Steer bred by the Cooke family at Tansey placed second and Joker, another Limo X Steer, bred by Jen-Daview Livestock at Kingaroy placing third.

Both animals were returned to the showring to compete for the Top 5 Champion Led Steer of the Show, with Henry placing fifth in a very strong line up.

At the completion of the Beef Section, the Kilkivan team stepped out of their comfort zone to compete in the Dairy Section.

“We were welcomed with smiles and encouragement as we walked up to compete in an event which is a little off our usual radar,” said Teresa.

She said that under the education and guidance of the Dairy committee, the students competed in Dairy Paraders and the Young Dairy Judges competition. “We would like to say a huge ‘thanks’ to the Wondai Show Dairy Committee for being so welcoming,” she said.

“Our students really do learn a lot, and take away a great amount of confidence from these new events.”

While the Wondai Show was the last Show event for the Kilkivan team, their last actual event for the year is the Wide Bay Interschool Hoof and Hook competition next week.
