There was an interesting offering of positive local news in ‘Gympie Today,’ Friday, 27 March.
First of all, congratulations to Brandi Kenman, winner of the Gympie Lions Youth of the Year award, and to the impressive lineup of finalists she had to beat.
No doubt we will hear more from Grace Williamson, winner of the Public Speaking Award.
And a community thank you to YOTY Coordinator, Murray Wegner, and Gympie Lions Club President, Narelle Roberts.
Without public-spirited people such as you, these platforms for youth just would not happen.
On the facing page, the Gympie Show Girl entrants were smiling in anticipation of their Awards Night, and Quota Club ‘girls’, Judy and Elizabeth, were proudly announcing the Club’s upcoming 65th birthday.
Ours is certainly a vibrant community!
But it wouldn’t be a stocking without at least one item that is a bit of a let-down.
And thinking of community, I wondered what happened to those petitions against the cessation of fluoridation of the city’s water.
Did I miss the announcement of their fate?
Perhaps our local Minister, the Hon. Mr Tony Perret, could throw some light on the (petition) to the State Government.
One hopes the issue is not dead and buried.
If the Council decision stands, it will almost certainly trigger a tsunami of tooth decay in our children and a Gympie dentist’s El Dorado in the coming decades.
Happy and safe Easter to all,
– Merv Welch,
The Palms.
