State of emergency

A State of Emergency has developed for Gympie’s last surviving dance venue — the Long Flat Hall.

Age and infirmity have taken their toll and resulted in the retirement of the Hall Committee, who have done sterling service for many decades.

It is now time for some younger community-minded people to take the baton and sustain the tradition.

If you have ever danced or thought about taking it up for exercise, social engagement, or sheer enjoyment, you have a vested interest in keeping this historical hall functioning as a dance venue.

Apart from its entertainment value, social dancing is a well-documented benefit to mental health and an antidote to dementia.

Furthermore, social dancing should be sustained as a recreational option for your children and your grandchildren.

Those who take it up will thank you for it.

I urge you to take the time to attend the Emergency Meeting (and sausage sizzle) at the Long Flat Hall on Friday, 6 February, at 6pm.

Your presence will be evidence of your interest in retaining the hall as the last local dance venue.

Let there be standing room only!

– Merv Welch,

The Palms.
