My friends will tell you, when it comes to sport, any sport, I am absolutely out of my depth.
But even I could tell there was something electric around Gympie this week, and it was all to do with rugby league.
On Monday afternoon, the good folks from the NRL and Youi teamed up to give the Gympie Devils junior rugby league club some new equipment and some monetary support following the club’s hard-fought battle to bring it back after the devastating floods in 2022.
And then the Maroons Fan Day on Tuesday had locals and those from further afield trekking to Gympie’s Albert Park for a chance to meet the Queensland Maroon’s State of Origin team ahead of next Wednesday’s game two (where we’re hoping they’ll smash the Blues!).
That was truly a testament to the Gympie love affair with rugby league and softened even my cynical old heart.
