Our history matters

I’m disappointed.

Not everyone values history, and some see looking backward as a barrier to moving forward.

But I have to say, I’m cheesed off at the Gympie Regional Council about the gantry at the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum.

Yes, it’s in a state of disrepair.

But why did it take so long for the council to evaluate it, when requests were made years ago?

Yes, it was only constructed in the ’70s.

But it’s been a very visible and recognisable part of our landscape for 50 years.

Yes, it is dangerous and on the point of collapse.

But is it that cost-prohibitive to repair it?

This reminds me of the public artwork in the Gympie Civic Centre, which, a couple of years ago “disappeared”, only to emerge, minus its feet, at the Bonnick Road Refuse facility.

Black mold was the unceremonious reason for its demise, we were told…
