I realise at 50ish I’ve left my run at getting on the property market a little late.

But these new rental laws for first-home buyers look to be a step in the right direction for helping solve the housing crisis for others in a similar situation.

Imagine, you can buy your first home, not pay stamp duty (which is usually a hefty whack of cash on top of your property price), and rent out a room in your new house for the first 12 months to help you pay for your mortgage.

Plus you give someone else who might be struggling to afford a rental, if they can find one, a home too.

There is another problem that needs to be solved for this to have a real impact, and that’s to do something about the slowdown in building approvals and the blowouts in construction times.
