We don’t need a referendum

The debate about giving aboriginal people a special “Voice” to the parliament and government of Australia should be conducted without imputing motives or denigrating those of opposing views.

In this paper – So far so good.

Michelle Daly argued for “Yes” without attacking those opposing and the letters last week were largely against the idea.

Of course each letter had points that were debatable – and this is the reason for proper debate.

I still do not understand why we are having the referendum.

The “Voice” could be legislated now.

It doesn’t need a referendum.

The Uluru statement requested it.

That does not mean we have to agree.

There is little upside to giving a future High Court increased power to overrule our elected representatives.

A changed constitution binds us for a long time and should be rejected as unnecessary, divisive and with potential problems.
