Resilience our greatest asset

Photos contributed to Gympie Regional Council outlining serious infrastructure damage.

I have always said that our region is the greatest place to live and that’s because of the people who live in our beautiful part of the world.

The level of community spirit shown by so many residents who helped their friends, neighbours and family during the recent flood was unlike anything I have seen before.

There were so many heroic stories, including farmers coming together to save livestock and equipment, emergency services workers saving people trapped in rising flood water, and the residents of Tansey helping the local bowls club move furniture as the facility became inundated with water.

It’s stories like these that prove why the residents of this region make it the greatest place to live and why I am so proud to be Mayor of the Gympie region.

The devastating impacts of this disaster were felt right across the region, especially in the western townships, where roads, community facilities and properties were significantly damaged or destroyed.

Thank you to residents who are sending in pictures, I have included a few images with this week’s message to illustrate just how widespread the damage was and what work will be required to allow roads and bridges to reopen.

I want to assure residents that our crews are working around the clock to restore access to those roads and bridges that have caused many residents to become stranded from their homes or nearest township.

As our region begins the long journey of recovering from this disaster, the mental health and welfare of our residents is of paramount importance.

There are a number of support services and measures now in place to assist residents impacted by this disaster, including financial assistance and community support services.

If you or someone you know needs help, please ask them to contact council on 1300 307 800 or visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/flood-recovery

The road to recovery will take time but it is important for everyone to remember that we are all in this together.
