Sunday am update: Flood peak passes through Gympie

A 14m flood peak is expected to pass through Gympie before river levels start to fall later in the morning, the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted.

But major flooding is now occurring in Maryborough, Miva and Tiaro after heavy rains to Gympie’s north, including significant floods over a large area from Woolooga and Kilkivan to Goomeri.

‘The Bureau says a moderate flood peak is expected to pass through Gympie later this morning.

Major flooding is now occurring at Maryborough, where a peak below the 2013 flood is expected later Sunday.

The official BoM warning said:

Heavy rainfall has been observed in parts of the Mary River catchment area. Some areas have observed rainfall totals to 9am Saturday morning in excess of 300 mm (with localised heavy falls in excess of 500-600 mm) particularly in central parts of the catchment. Rainfall is forecast to continue easing on Sunday, but showers remain possible.

River levels are high and widespread moderate to major flooding is occurring across the Mary River catchment.

Mary River to Gympie:

Moderate flooding is occurring along the Mary River to Gympie.

The Mary River at Dagun Pocket peaked at 13.14 metres (moderate flood level 13.0m) around 11:30 pm Saturday 08 January and is currently at 12.96 metres and falling, with minor flooding. The Mary River at Dagun Pocket will continue falling during Sunday, but is expected to remain above the minor flood level (7.00 m).

The Mary River at Gympie is currently at 13.01 metres and rising, with moderate flooding. The river level may peak around 14.00 metres later Sunday morning. The Mary River at Gympie is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (12.00 m) into Sunday afternoon.

Six Mile Creek:

Flooding is being observed in the Six Mile Creek with minor flooding at Cooran.

Mary River downstream of Gympie:

Major flooding is occurring along the Mary River downstream of Gympie.

The Mary River at Miva peaked at 19.86 metres around 8pm Saturday, and is currently at 19.11 metres and falling, with major flooding. The Mary River at Miva is expected to remain above the major flood level (15.50 m) on Sunday morning and into Sunday afternoon.

The Mary River at Tiaro is currently at 20.60 metres and rising, with major flooding. The Mary River at Tiaro is expected to remain above the major flood level (12.00 m) on Sunday.

A manual observation of 8.8 m for the river level station at Maryborough was recorded at 04:50 am Sunday Morning (above the minor flood level 5.0 m). The nearby station at Portside is currently 9.01 m (major flood level 9.0 m) and rising. The Mary River at Maryborough is likely to peak near 10.50 metres Sunday evening, this will be below the peak in January 2013 of 10.7 metres.

Tinana Creek:

Flooding and strong rises are being observed in the Tinana Creek catchment, with moderate flooding at Tagigan Rd.
