Gympie Regional Council is calling on residents to donate decorations to hang on the Christmas tree in Nelson Reserve.
The call is on the back of a number of local businesses donating lighting.
“2020 has been a tough year for our community and if we can generate some Christmas spirit by decorating the tree, then Council is all for it,” said Councillor Shane Waldock.
“I understand the Christmas tree has been a rather contentious issue in the past, but with the help of some generous local businesses we have been able to source some appropriate up-lighting.
“We have had our expert council staff assess the condition of the tree and there will be some parameters on how we can decorate it.
“I am sure that whatever donations we receive will look fantastic,” Cr Waldock said.
To ensure the tree is not stressed, the weight of the decoration cannot exceed 250g, and cannot be larger than a standard football.
The council have also suggested incorporating wire coat hangers embedded in your design with the hook at the top as a method to hang the decorations.
The Christmas decorations can be donated at Gympie Library between 9am and 4pm weekdays.
Community partners involved with the Christmas tree initiative include Energex, Groves Electrical and Sherriff Electrical.
