Diving into digital futures

One Mile State School recently announced the launch of its ‘Bring Your Own Device’ program for Year 5 and 6 students, marking a significant milestone as Gympie’s first state primary school to implement such an initiative.

Spearheaded by Principal Louise Parry, the program aims to prepare primary school students for their transition to high school and the increasingly digital-centric landscapes shaping their futures.

“I am delighted that we have 30 students now bringing their devices to school,” said Ms Parry.

“Students are using online learning platforms as part of their everyday schoolwork and are so engaged and motivated to participate in learning.”

Embracing a daily digital approach, students at One Mile State School are empowered to build essential digital skills while benefiting from flexible learning opportunities.

Teachers have embraced the program, noting its positive impact on student engagement and their own professional development.

“One Mile State School continues to lead in the Gympie area by providing exciting learning opportunities for students,” Ms Parry said.

“Next year, we will extend the program to include Year 4 students, ensuring that all students have equitable access to an excellent education.”

Highlighting the program’s significance, Year 6 teacher Lucy Cantle remarked, “What an exciting time at One Mile State School with the launch of the amazing BYOD project.

“Information and communication technologies are an important part of contemporary schooling with the Australian Curriculum including ICTs (Information and Communication Technology) as a general capability across all curriculum areas,” she said

She also said it is “a wonderful opportunity, supported by our P&C, making One Mile State School the first primary school in Gympie to offer BYOD.”

“The future is now at One Mile State School.”

In addition to the Bring Your Own Device program, One Mile State School provides laptops to all students, regardless of whether they bring their own device to school.

This inclusive approach ensures that all students have access to the tools they need for a successful educational journey.
