Gympie cops want you to survive your drive

With the summer school holidays just around the corner, Gympie Police are encouraging drivers to stay safe on the roads, and they’ll be out at the Caltex Traveston Service Centre tomorrow, Friday, 12 December, to share some timely reminders.

Senior Constable Debbie Page and the Gympie Crime Prevention Unit will host a community road safety display from 10am to 2pm, offering practical advice and answering questions as locals prepare for one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

“It’s that time of the year again when families are off visiting relatives and friends for Christmas and New Year (or, if you are lucky, going on holidays),” Senior Constable Page said.

With the road toll in Queensland this year nudging 300 lives lost, police are urging motorists to plan ahead and keep a few simple habits in mind:

* Take regular breaks – stretch your legs, reset your focus and avoid the dangers of fatigue.

* Be patient – traffic is heavier over the holidays, so allow extra time for your journey.

* Expect the unexpected – leave more space between you and the car ahead.

* Check your blind spots – a quick shoulder glance can prevent a costly mistake.

* Let the kids burn energy – stopping near parks or playgrounds can make the drive safer and less stressful for everyone.

The Queensland Police Service continues to highlight the importance of avoiding the Fatal Five behaviours: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.

Reducing these risks remains a key focus in lowering road trauma across the state.

Community members are invited to drop in, meet the team and pick up some useful safety resources.

“If you can, come down and say hello! We are more than happy to answer any of your questions,” Senior Constable Page said.
