Rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Alfred has the potential to cause major flooding along Queensland coastal rivers from Maryborough to the NSW Border, including the Mary and Noosa Rivers and creeks in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
“Isolated flooding may develop from Friday morning, with more widespread flooding likely from overnight Friday into Saturday, continuing into early next week,” the Bureau of Meteorology reports.
“Rapid and dangerous river level rises and flash flooding are expected across many creeks, associated with the heaviest rainfall. Widespread minor to major riverine flooding is likely.
Catchments likely to be affected include the Mary and Noosa Rivers.
Rain in Gympie region is only part of the problem, with very heavy rain and a possibly severe thunderstorm predicted in the Mary’s upper catchment near Maleny.
Tomorrow, possibly heavy falls may involve up to 150mm of rain.
In Gympie region, a very high chance of rain is the forecast for the afternoon and evening.
Another 120mm is possible tomorrow.
