Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, now officially a Tropical Low, lies off Bribie Island and is only 40km from Maroochydore as it moves slowly north.
The system is still bringing wind and rain and is expected to cross the mainland coast between Maroochydore and Bribie Island this morning.
That is the latest from the Bureau of Meteorology in what it says is its final Cyclone Watch for the system.
Winds near the centre are still reaching 55km/h with gusts to 85km/h
It is approaching the Sunshine Coast, still moving slowly at about 9km/h.
“Gales are no longer occurring over coastal or island locations. It is expected to move towards and cross the mainland coast this morning, with winds weakening further as it moves inland,” the bureau says.
“Despite its weakening, heavy rainfall is likely to continue over southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales during the weekend,” it says.
Heavy and locally intense rainfall still carries the threat of dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding.
Abnormally high tides are no longer occurring in coastal areas, but they will still be higher than usual over the weekend.
Damaging surf may continue with significant beach erosion for open beaches.
