
Motorists and residents in parts of Gympie’s eastern side have been warned of high water, including at road crossings downstream of the Cedar Pocket Dam.
Seqwater’s Flood Operations Centre has been activated and is monitoring dam levels across its South East Queensland territory, in response to predicted downpours from Tropical Cyclone Afred.
It says recent rain in the catchment area has resulted in the Cedar Pocket, among others on the Sunshine Coast, spilling excess water.
All of Seqwater’s recreation sites, including Borumba Dam are closed to recreation “due to the severe weather event associated with Tropical Cyclone Alfred. “Once conditions are safe, we will check for hazards and re-open lakes as soon as possible. “Ungated dams are designed to spill during periods of heavy rain to ensure the protection and safety of the dam.”
Elsewhere, no flood releases are current, although this could change, at Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams.
No flood releases are currently occurring from Wivenhoe, Somerset or North Pine Dams.
Seqwater advises drivers and others to be aware of high water anywhere downstream of dams, including at vehicle crossings.
“Avoid potential hazards downstream of dams such as fast flowing or deep water near waterways and floodplains.”

Drivers can check on “road or crossing closures or other flood impacts” via council websites.
