A world of adventure awaits

Our local Scouts are busily preparing for another exciting year of learning new skills, exploring the outdoors and travelling to places near and far for camps and activities and to socialise with their many scouting friends. They’ll kick the year off with a sausage sizzle fundraiser at Bunnings, Saturday 28 January and will include a display of the marvellous things our Gympie youth have recently attended and been involved in.

Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful support and personal encouragement offered by their scout leaders who organise and run their weekly programs. They also plan and enjoy the fun and adventures undertaken by our scouting youth during their camping weekends and nights spent at their local dens.

They’re also supported by their committees, parents and various volunteers who not only maintain the dens and equipment but also organise fundraising events to subsidise the cost of scouting making it more affordable for families.

Scouts have been part of the Gympie community since 1908 and many local people have fond memories of their adventures and the friendships made during their time in the movement. Scouting is a family friendly organisation with activities for young people from 5 to 25 as well as adult supporters and like-minded folks who enjoy working with others, have a sense of adventure and take pleasure in exploring the great outdoors. Many leaders are former scouts passing on their knowledge and skills learned over many years to their own family members while other parents became leaders as it allows them to join in the fun their children are having.

The training provided for adults is nationally accredited and can lead to Cert IVs in many areas, including outdoor recreation & leadership courses. The experience gained and the qualification levels attained are highly regarded by employers, particularly for those seeking to work in the recreation industry.

Our groups currently have vacancies for adult volunteers who enjoy working with young people, encouraging them to develop their personal and leadership skills. Previous experience is not essential but a willingness to “learn by doing” is important as well as the ability to enjoy life, have fun while learning and have a sense of adventure. If you think you “fit the bill” then why not give scouting a go?

Want to know more? Why not drop in for a chat at our Bunnings Sausage Sizzle this Saturday. Come along and check out our display and meet our leaders. Learn first-hand of the places they’ve been, their many adventures and exciting times they’ve experienced since joining the Scout movement.

Can’t make it on the day but would like to know more? Contact the Gympie District Commissioner, Carol Harris, on 0437 426 055.
