Jones Hill State School put on quite the show last weekend, with their sold out performances of “Superkids” filling up the seats at Hamilton Hall, Gympie State High School.
Behind the rock musical filled with quirky named characters and upbeat songs, contains an important takeaway message about bullying.
Main character Captain Vegemite, played by Riley Johnston, who accidentally gained superpowers after eating granny smith apples and Vegemite, teamed up with Wholemeal Kid, played by Bethany Graham, to defeat the school bullies.
Made up of 40 students between Years 3-6, the cast rehearsed during breaks and after school throughout terms two and three to be ready in time.
Jones Hill primary teacher and musical co-coordinator Rebecca Crow said both nights of the performance went off without a hitch.
“The students performed wonderfully on Friday and Saturday night at Hamilton Hall, to a full house of Jones Hill families,” she said.
“It was a great way to showcase our students’ talent.”
The bullies, adeptly named Snot, Weasel and Scabs, the school principal, teachers and the nurse were also played by students.
Captain Vegemite in particular though, was a prime example of rising above bullying and doing right by yourself.
“His courage is an example to all students, who now feel empowered to stand up for themselves,” Ms Crow said.
