A Sunshine Coast man is dead, roads and highways are cut and vehicles have been swept down flooded creeks as major flooding hits the near Gympie area to the north and west.
The dead man, 22, was found in his vehicle on Saturday morning, after it was apparently swept off Cherry Tree Road, near the high rainfall epicentre at Kanigan
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of likely major flooding at Maryborough during Sunday morning, as significant inundation is reported at Miva and Tiaro, as well as western Gympie districts from Kilkivan and Woolooga to Goomeri.
Gympie Regional Council has announced the opening of evacuation centres at Kilkivan and Goomeri Halls, as severe flooding affects nearby districts and cuts or damages some roads.
More than 650mm fell at Mt Kanigan, in one of the worst affected areas, as emergency crews work to verify the safety of others, believed stranded by floods and extreme rainfall.
The continuing rain came on top of heavy falls yesterday and overnight, adding to earlier heavy rainfall.
The Mary River at Dagun Pocket is currently reported at 12.64m and rising, with minor flooding. The river level is likely to peak around the moderate flood level (13m) overnight Saturday into Sunday, the bureau says.
The Mary River at Gympie is currently at 12.01m and rising, with moderate flooding. The Mary River at Gympie may peak between 13.5m and 14m overnight Saturday into Sunday.
Six Mile Creek:
Strong creek level rises have been observed in upper parts of the Six Mile Creek with minor flooding at Cooran and Lake MacDonald Drive.
Mary River downstream of Gympie:
Major flooding is expected along the Mary River downstream of Gympie.
The Mary River at Miva is currently at 19.77m and steady, with major flooding. The Mary River at Miva is expected to remain above the major flood level (15.5m) overnight Saturday into Sunday.
The Mary River at Tiaro is currently at 18.9m and rising, with major flooding. The river at Tiaro is expected to remain above the major flood level (12m) overnight Saturday into Sunday.
The Mary River at Maryborough will exceed the moderate flood level (8m) overnight Saturday into Sunday. The river level is likely to exceed the major flood level (9m) late Sunday morning.
Tinana Creek:
Strong creek level rises are being observed in upper parts of the Tinana Creek catchment, with major flooding at Tagigan Rd.
