Beyond ‘Bondi and beyond’

I read Rowena Amin’s passionate letter ‘Bondi and beyond’ (Gympie Today, Friday, 9 January) and agreed with much of what she had to say.

For one thing, she is so right about racist violence in Australia, putting it elegantly— “It is woven into the nation’s foundations.”

But I think she might have the tense wrong when she states that the Jewish people fear “…that they will be made to pay for the crimes of a state and leaders they do not control, like Benjamin Netanyahu.”

That is surely what they have been doing for the past two years, not only in Australia but around the world.

It was also surprising to read that the genocide in Gaza is termed a “matter of significant international debate”.

The ‘debate’ being between, among others, “…human rights organisations, and UN bodies” and “Israel and its supporters.”

Hardly a debate!

Rather, the perfectly predictable accusation and denial.

All decent people would agree with Ms Amin’s assertion that “No cause on earth can justify the slaughter of unarmed civilians”.

Its relevance certainly goes beyond Bondi.
