The Kilkivan State School Cattle Team recently travelled away to their last event of the year; the three-day, Wide Bay Interschool Hoof & Hook Competition which was being held in Monto this year.
Fifteen schools and over 150 students were in attendance.
The Kilkivan team of six students and three steers competed in Young Judges, Cattle Paraders, Live Carcass Assessments, and Led Steer competitions.
The students also attended education sessions on beef industry-related topics such as working dogs, farm safety, branding of cattle, animal nutrition, and livestock marketing.
The Kilkivan State School Cattle Team had an extremely successful week and was awarded many ribbons in the Paraders and Young Judges classes.
After the students set a high standard, they then went on to prepare their led steers for the hoof classes.
Led steer, Lightning placed first in the Lightweight class, Diesel placed second in the Middleweight class, and Turbo was placed in the top 5 for his heat.
Lightning and Diesel then both went on to be called up for Championship Judging.
“It’s a pretty awesome sight to see two of our steers out in the Championship Judging Ring,” said a spokeswoman for the group, Teresa Day.
At the presentation dinner on the third day of the event, Kilkivan State School was announced as the ‘Most Successful School’ for the entire competition.
“We are extremely proud of the way our team consistently present themselves and their animals with pride,” Mrs Day said.
“Their hard work, dedication, and commitment in striving to learn more about the beef industry is infectious.
“This week has been the culmination of months of work, and we simply couldn’t have wished for a better reward,” she said.
