A relaxing afternoon was spent at Veteran Hall on Neighbour Day, Sunday 28 March and the occasion of the Hall’s 91st birthday.
The weather was glorious with fantastic views from the Hall over the Veteran District.
It had been two years since there was live music in the Hall at the last Neighbour Day celebration.
This time four local artists with an eclectic mix of music entertained a Covid comfortable crowd.
Delicious food was available from the Bullseye Food Truck.
To start the afternoon, Andrea Kirwin had a warm and welcoming stage presence with an earthy blend of music.
She performed a mix of original material with some hint of her Fijian roots, and popular songs.
Then there was local artist, Georgia Rose.
Though still new to performing in front of a crowd, she delivered a talented set to a very supportive audience.
Pepper Jane followed – an honest, sassy performer of both original songs based on personal life experiences and popular songs.
She cajoled and enticed the audience to come along for the ride, even getting them to sing along.
There was a break in proceedings for the cutting of the birthday cake and three boisterous cheers for the Hall’s 91st birthday, while the next artist set up.
Aspy Jones, another local artist, performed a lively mix of acoustic pop/rock with some reggae and rap mixed in.
On stage with him were his sister, brother and friends including a brass player.
He entertained with a mix of original songs mirroring his experiences and observations, and popular songs.
Some in the audience just had to dance (socially distancing of course).
The birthday cake was shared and enjoyed and everyone took an extra slice home.
Keep an eye out for more local live music at Veteran Hall in the future.
The Veteran Hall Social Committee Inc. thanks the Regional Arts Development Grant (partnership between the Queensland Government and Gympie Regional Council) that supported the event.
