It was a beautiful day for a birthday last Tuesday down at the Gympie Bowls Club, Southside.

Stepping out onto the greens, bowlers were seen left and right in all sorts of coloured polo shirts, anticipating the time where they could come inside and see the celebration set up.

Tuesday 9 August marked the Gympie Ladies Bowls Club 90th birthday celebration, and many members from many different clubs were present for the milestone.

The Gympie Ladies Bowls Club was established in 1932 and is home to some long serving members.

Betty Lawrence remembers when the club used to be at its original location, and was present during the 75th anniversary.

“I joined the club when we were on Wickham Street in 1974,” she said.

“But the last few years I’ve just remained a social member.

“I sell the raffle tickets every second Tuesday.”

Denise Long and Elva Haylock are also long-time members, with Ms Haylock being a Patroness of the club for around three years.

“I’m supposed to know everything about everything but I don’t,” Ms Haylock laughed.

A club member of a few decades herself, it’s safe to say that Ms Haylock may in fact, know everything about the club.

“Wednesday is our playing day,” she said.

“There’s ten clubs in our area and every Tuesday there’s one club that will come to our place.”

The Gympie Ladies Bowls Club couldn’t have reached the level of longevity and success without some truly dedicated volunteers.

Club president Daphne Davies hasn’t been in her role for long, but already she’s made a positive impact on her fellow members.

“She’s fairly new to the club, but she took on the presidency which was just wonderful,” Ms Haylock said.

“She really is doing a good job and she’s such a nice person.”

All three unanimously agreed that friendship was one of the main reasons they kept coming back to the club.

“And the game! The game is very challenging,” Ms Haylock chimed in.

Ms Lawrence and Ms Haylock had the honour of cutting the 90th anniversary cake, and big smiles were present for all.

Gympie Bowls Club is always looking for new members of any age and skill level. Whether you’re competitive or just in it for fun, the club has something for everyone and offers great hospitality.
