It’s been less than a few weeks since James Smith was hired at Sauers Produce and Garden Centre Gympie, and already he’s proven to be a huge asset to the team.
Owner Kelly O’Farrell said with his plethora of knowledge, he’s been a great addition to Sauer’s already.
“He has knowledge in livestock, animal health and nutrition,” she said.
“We’re lucky to have him.”
A Gympie local himself and an avid lover of the agriculture industry, Mr Smith studied a four year degree in Agribusiness and Agricultural Science down at Gatton near Brisbane, with a keen interest in nutrition and genetics.
“It definitely helps having a livestock background,” he said.
“I’ve grown up on a farm all my life here.
“My family has been in the area for about 50 years.”
Currently a trainee manager, his responsibilities range far and wide from working under the owners Ben Bernard and Kelly O’Farrell, to customer service and advice.
“Just working together with Ben and Kelly and the team, and focusing on the animal health and nutrition side of things and pasture,” he said.
“I enjoy bridging the gap between customer and their query.
“I think I’m lucky to be here.”
At the moment, Mr Smith is learning the ropes of how the store works and runs.
“Eventually I’ll be representing us at places,” he said.
“Meeting with suppliers and that sort of thing.”
Mr Smith grew up helping his parents with two cattle studs, making his experience that of the real world.
“I’m loving it here, everyone is just a joy to work with,” he said.
“We’ve all got our own little strengths.
“When we come together, that’s how we can benefit the business.”
